The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Plant Growth Facility (PGF) is a state-of-the-art facility built for research product development The PGF provides its users with a variety of plant growth spaces and climates as well as expert horticultural services.

The PGF complex consists of:

  • Three greenhouses ranges (43 bays) providing 54,130 total sq. ft of active growth space with houses of various sizes and functional capabilities.  Select houses are equipped with air-conditioning, in-floor heating, high intensity lighting, autoirrigation systems, and adjustable light canopies for more precise lighting control.  PGF users are free to utilize any of the three potting rooms as well as seed processing, soils handling and general work areas.

  • 84 total plant growth chambers (48) and growth rooms (36).  All chambers offer variable lighting, temperature, and humidity control.  Advanced chamber features include carbon dioxide supplementation or scrubbing, high light intensity (up to 1000 µmol/m2/s),  low and high temperature control ( -10°C to 50°C), and spectral control using LED technology.

  • The expert PGF staff members provide 365 days a year care for all plants so that researchers are able to focus more completely on their science instead of plant care.  Please see our Services for more information.
